How It will work The chain of command is as follows: The mortician calls St. Patrick's office notifying the secretary of a funeral; the secretary calls the platoon leader; the platoon leader calls the squad leader on duty that week; the squad leader calls the fire team leader; the fire team leader calls his fire team on call for that time of the day. The fire team leader presents the flag to the family; the riflemen present a rifle salute; and a bugler gives the parting salute. Thus we can give appropriate honor to all service men and women who are buried from our community. Primary responsibility of the mission belongs to the Marine Corps League Central Wyoming Detachment #807, the Knights of Columbus, the BSA sponsoring organization and St. Patrick’ Church. It is estimated that fifteen hundred World War Two veterans die every day. In Casper there is little or no opportunity for a military unit to provide the proper burial ceremony for veterans. This unit will serve that purpose and teach patriotism and respect for the values of this country. This unit will be a disciplined and well-trained unit bringing pride and honor to the City of Casper.
This is the Platte River Detachment of Marines, Oregon Trail Veterans Cemetery paying honor to Sergeant Brandon Reiss, Killed in Action, Iraq, in May of 2003. One can understand the importance of providing a military presence by this picture. This service will be provided without charge of course but donations will help keep the operation solvent. It is estimated that 12,000 plaques or more would decorate this memorial. The project would anticipate and deter graffiti artists from making the face of the Wall unattractive. The name, SUN UP RIDGE, indicates the direction in which the wall is facing and the effect of the first rays of sunlight hitting the wall. This wall would become an artistic and attractive addition to the multitude of artistic talents on display in the area of Casper. The area above the plaque area will be a mural, thirteen hundred feet long. Students from the school district could be invited to contribute a panel for the mural. This would give ownership to students and help protect the Wall from vandalism. The mural will show the entire history of the Wyoming from pre-historic times to the present. The Wall would be divided into panels so as many as two hundred and fifty students may participate. The cost of the plaques would require no money from any agency. But we are asking for start up costs that will be returned to the Foundation when the escrow account contains the amount of money requested as start up expenses. This program is designed to be self-sustaining. The Marine Corps League will disperse the funds for the charities and on a monthly basis place newly purchased plaques on the wall. Those who are experts in mounting the plaques have determined the method on how this will be accomplished. The Wall will become a source of pride for Casper and the Department of Highways. Casper and Wyoming will benefit from this magnificent addition to the Platte River Parkway and the government will have no financial investment. Leo R.
